According to a recent study, football injuries are most severe at the beginning of a game or during kickoff. When comparing injuries from the beginning of the game, middle of the game, and end of the game, those injuries sustained at the beginning of the game were found to be more severe and often included concussions.
Research suggests that these injuries are more severe when the intensity of a game is at its highest. Competition is often fiercer at the start of the game, and this contributes to more severe injuries.
Thirty-three percent of injuries that occurred during kickoff were considered severe, and 20 percent of those were concussions. Some possible warning signs of a concussion can include:
-Loss of consciousness
-Confusion or disorientation
-Slurred speech or delayed response
-Difficulty paying attention
According to the study conducted by researchers from the Center for Injury Research and Policy at The Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, the beginning of the game accounted for 16 percent of injuries. This is compared to 54 percent occurring during the middle of the game, and 30 percent at the end of the game or during overtime. This means fewer injuries are sustained at the beginning of the game, but they are the most damaging injuries.
