At Sierra Pacific Orthopedics, the region's most preferred orthopedic practice, our specialty-trained physical medicine and rehabilitation doctors are recognized experts in assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients with chronic pain.

Doctors known as physiatrists work within a medical specialty called physical medicine and rehabilitation, or physiatry. These medical doctors offer patient-centered care focused on restoring an individual’s musculoskeletal function as well as their overall health after an injury, disabling condition, or illness.

Physiatrists offer a range of services for people of all ages, including rehabilitation for adolescents and children as well as care for older adults with a variety of medical conditions or disabilities. Typically, rehabilitation programs focus on treatments for areas of the brain, bones, muscles, and nerves that impact a patient’s movements. Physiatrists do not practice surgery.

Physiatrists are physicians who take a comprehensive approach to caring for patients' health, working with each person individually to diagnose and address what are often multiple treatment needs, including medical, emotional, and social needs. The medical treatments physiatrists provide may also involve different parts of the body's musculoskeletal structure. The treatment modalities could be anything from physical therapy offered after a spinal cord injury to medicine for rehabilitation, such as pain medications and spinal injections or steroid injections, to help a patient after a traumatic accident or sports injury.

What to Expect With Our Physiatrists

After a thorough assessment, which may include electrodiagnostic medicine, or electromyography (EMG), and nerve conduction studies, and on-site imaging (including X-ray, MRI, and bone density scans), our specialists will work with you to determine a course of treatment. Our physiatrists will develop a nonsurgical treatment plan personalized for you, which may involve anti-inflammatory medications and minimally invasive nonoperative options like epidural steroid injections and in-office orthobiologics. We also offer physical therapy with our certified physical therapists to aid in your rehabilitation.

When surgery is necessary, our physiatrists and nonsurgical spine specialists work with our surgeons to ensure that our patients receive the right care for the best outcomes. Additionally, as part of our Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Center, our physiatrists and physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians work together as a dedicated care team to offer you comprehensive rehabilitation services and the latest treatments to help you live with reduced pain and restored function.
