Benefits of Breakfast

Having something to eat first thing in the morning is an important way to start the day.  Although you have heard this many times before, it is crucial to understand why it is so important. A nutritious breakfast can kick start your metabolism and improve your energy, along with your ability to focus.  I think of breakfast as some fuel for your body in the morning.  After a night of sleep, your blood sugar may be low and in need of some food.  If you skip this meal, you are more likely to be low in energy and have an increased risk of overeating later in the day.

I often hear people say that they just “don’t have time” for breakfast.  Eating every morning does not have to be a big production.  Save some leftovers from last night’s dinner to reheat the following day.  Although requiring a bit of prep work, you can also make “breakfast egg cups” by mixing eggs with cooked vegetables and baking the mixture in a muffin pan.  These will not only keep in the fridge for 4-5 days, but will also freeze really well for on-the-go breakfasts during the week.  Try some whole grain cereal and fruit. Make a breakfast “smoothie”.  Be sure to stay away from the donuts and pastries, as these are foods that both lack nutrition and come at a high calorie cost.  It is best to have a nutrient dense food that has a good mix of carbohydrates, protein, healthy fats and fiber to start your day.

Make breakfast a priority. Take the time.  Do some pre-planning.  Your body will thank you later.
